Stack Point

OFFICIALLY KNOWN AS PENNANCE POINT (STACK TO THE LOCALS)

Pennance Point, also known as Stack Point, is a headland located on the southwest coast of England, near the town of Falmouth in Cornwall. This rugged and picturesque headland is steeped in history, with a rich mining heritage that dates back to the mid-19th century.

The name "Stack Point" is derived from the former mining stack that was located on the headland. This stack was the focus point for burning ores associated with historic mining activities from around The Swanpool.

Although no record of mineral extraction itself can be found to have taken place on the site, the lower field was the base for the processing of ores by the Falmouth Chemical Works. The bi-products were used in Europe in the glass-making industry and as sheep dip in Australia and New Zealand. The processing ceased circa 1865, following which the smelting works were dismantled and abandoned, leaving Stack Point exclusively for residential use for more than 150 years.

In addition to the mining activities, Pennance Point was also the location of an arsenic works. Arsenic was recovered from the ore by calcining, a process that involved heating the ore to high temperatures in order to drive off the arsenic, which could then be collected and processed. The remains of the arsenic works can still be seen on the cliffs to the west, although they are now mostly grassed over.

Despite the industrial legacy of the area, Pennance Point is now a popular spot for visitors and locals alike. The headland offers stunning views of the sea and coastline, as well as opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, and other outdoor activities. The rugged cliffs and rocky shoreline are also popular with photographers and artists, who are drawn to the dramatic landscapes and unique geology of the area.

Stack Point is a fascinating and beautiful location with a rich history and diverse range of natural and cultural features. From its mining and industrial past to its present-day status as a popular recreational destination, the headland continues to captivate and inspire both locals and visitors from around the world. Perfect.
